Because of the Dodge v Ford ruling (early 20th century) corporations can be sued by their shareholders for not pursuing measures that maximize shareholder ROI. If one company claims that they've implemented AI & increased the companies profitability, the shareholders of other corporations can use this precedent to pressure the CEOs/board of directors into implementing similar cost-saving measures. It doesn't actually do anything, they'll just use it to justify layoffs, and then eventually rehire for "growth".
The problem is that it's kind of a forced behavior that cascades through entire industries, in a top-down sort of way, because of the dodge v ford ruling
CEOs & teams need to basically prove that AI couldn't be used to make the company more efficient, as long as there is a company that's claiming that they've done it, rather than the alternative, which would be individual teams in the org proving it works & then pushing the change bottom up.
