Withdrawing access to labor used to be the main leverage that the average person had. There's a reason why democracy grew up with coal - coal was an extremely labor intensive and a critical economic input. If you could choke it off you could get what you wanted, and labor unions could choke it off and they wanted democracy, social services, affordable housing, etc.. He who can destroy a thing controls a thing. If all of the wealth accrues to people who own land and natural resources and military power and they barely need any labor any more then what do they do with the rest of us when they don't need us? My guess is that they'll price people out, drive people elsewhere, "other" the untermensch and eventually construct some sort of ideology around exterminating the untermensch who will, of course, become more belligerent and violent every step of the way. This has been a repeated theme already throughout history. Humanity does seem to keep on doing this to ourselves. I'm pretty pessimistic about the effects of too much automation and not enough labor power. Automation isn't the problem, though, it's the scapegoat used by the small group of people who exert undemocratic power over society. That small group of people are not pitchfork resistant though - they're soft and squishy and vulnerable, unlike the concepts of AI and automation.
