I don't think an AI needs to be self aware in order to present a serious threat. It just needs to have goals programmed in, and be recursively self-improving/optimising. I can see you might argue that self-improvement requires self awareness, in that it is able to inspect its own systems, but I'd argue that the term 'self aware' implies *conscious* awareness of self. The first dictionary I searched supports me on this: "*having conscious knowledge of one's own character and feelings*". Self-optimisation doesn't require consciousness, we already have the beginnings of self-optimising code and it's just that: code. Yes, that's semantics, but you used the term ;)
