It’s actually not illegal. The article said specifically that there’s no clear basis that it’s illegal. But you’re right that this is not new. Deepfake porn has been around for nearly a decade and no one has ever gotten in criminal trouble for it. Even before deepfakes, what was to prevent someone from using Microsoft paint to copy a girl from school’s body and paste it onto a naked model? That sure as hell wasn’t illegal.
