I have a very similar background as you do (even going back into IT as a teen in the 80's). I agree with everything you said, except for the following:

That ship has already sailed unfortunately. Government can't even move fast enough to regulate the internet in the fact of commerce, AI is now moving at a pace 100 times faster than the dotcom explosion and the development of the internet... By the time the government even understands enough about what AI is and actually does to put one single regulation in place, AI will already be too deployed.
Here's a scary thought... There are already hundreds of people trying to train AI on stock market data, which will undoubtably end up getting deployed soon given that the historical data is all widely available. Wall street is aware of this (and has been for about 5 years) and many of their old "quant's" have been repurposed to AI projects to attempt to train these models. I give us 12 months before the first major AI manipulation of the stock market becomes public, and, when the public cannot trust that the market is fair, what could they do in response?
