The way I like to see it is as a swimming pool. Developed nations dumped endless amounts of wastewater into the pool for the past century to industrialize quickly without regard for the environment. Now that the pool’s 3/4 full, the up-and-comers are being told by the developed nations not to dump like they did because the pool’s nearly full, and to instead fuck off and figure something else out. Then when the up-and-comers bring up the historical waste dumping by the developed nations, they say “sure we dumped shitloads in the past but now that we’re rich and developed, we spend a fraction of that wealth to build wastewater treatment plants that you can’t afford. Sure, we nearly filled the pool and now there’s a risk of overflowing because of it, but what matters is we’re barely dumping *now*,so you can’t dump despite our past prolific dumping.” Doesn’t even work in the US’s case cuz they’re still dumping prolifically. 3-4x less people to generate wastewater and still producing 2x more per person.
