I'd be curious as to the passage that was interpreted this way. The traits of empathy, compassion, cooperation etc do have evolutionary roots, so our morality *is* linked to our evolutionary past. But that isn't the same thing as us, philosophically, venerating anything the process of evolution spits out. Racism and xenophobia also have evolutionary roots.
