I think many are missing the point. The companies themselves are totally for supplying and distributing the vaccine to developing countries.
Where they refuse to give up, is the patent. Why give up the intellectually property after spending millions in R&D? The problem is two-fold, of which the first has been explained by others - giving up patents set a precedence for future research, and is totally unfair for companies. I’ll therefore skip this part and go into what I actually have concern over.
Giving up patents and allowing developing countries to produce these vaccines can erode public confidence in said vaccine. These less well off countries have fewer resources, talents and capabilities to develop anything to the standard and excellence that developed countries can. That is, if we consider the efficiency and quality. Quality control is, and could likely be an aspect which very well may be compromised for efficiency/price. What then happens, when news likes “Woman who takes Pfizer vaccine dies of complications” comes out? This may lead to the illusion of vaccine-related problems and essentially lead to distrust in the vaccine, thereby killing of what is otherwise a perfectly good vaccine. This is especially true in healthcare, where people are extremely reluctant to take any chances. So, the question actually goes beyond profits, and it is up to the professionals to develop a proper answer.
