We have a bunch of semi-autonomous vehicles on the road. People use them to partially self drive. They've being in accidents. The precedent is set - the driver is responsible for using the tools of the car to get into accidents. From a consumer perspective, is that a terrible thing? Would I buy a vehicle to which I'm liable for damages if they occur, even if I'm not the one taking action? Rationally - yes, if it meant that I was proveably less likely to get into an accident, AND I get to enjoy a leisurely commute... then assuming the risk and liability of accident is a reasonable trade off - especially given that risk and liability would be greater WITHOUT the AI (as I'd be driving - and I'm human and more fallible). Of course, I'm going to let other people beta test all of that for a while though - new tech is expensive and less reliable after all.
