They aren't waiting for the PCR to finish. They are basically determining the result just after it passes the threshold.
This method has become common place for some flu testing in the past few years, but it can lead to a number of problems without significant clinical trials to show proper sensitivity and accuracy.
There hasn't been enough time for that.
Just run it through the normal 60-72 minutes and get a good, verified curve to analyze.
Seems like an odd choice considering current circumstances.
