You can use the argument that “this is the way it’s always been done” to justify several atrocities. For hundreds of thousands of years people kept slaves, sacrificed people to appease their gods, and raped and murdered all for their own personal gain/survival. To claim that we should do something simply because it helped us advance is preposterous. We were advancing so that those things no longer have to happen. Now, there is no choice. The planet can not sustain the current way of life that is being lived upon it. Wether you believe in the sentience of creatures and wether you think harming a living thing is inherently cruel or immoral is up to you. There has to be a large scale change, and it has to come from the people otherwise we will not survive.
