I really hope he's right, but I strongly suspect he's not. I can see how it ***could*** go this way, but I have a different prediction that seems more likely to me... "Your worth is determined by your work." Like it or not, this is a central tenet of American culture. The first question asked of you by a stranger is generally "So what do you do?" We literally define ourselves by our jobs. An idea this entrenched in our psyche won't disappear overnight. It won't disappear, even when the lack of meaningful work grinds our employment figures to shreds. It won't matter that it will be easy to demonstrate that it's not the fault of those made obsolete by automation, they will still be obsolete, and therefore, worthless. Where Bill Gates sees a sunny, easier future for the masses, I see misery and political polarization that will divide right along the lines of who still has a job, and who doesn't. The Right in this country will find a way to blame the inevitable crash on all those "lazy, unemployed freeloaders looking for handouts" and the Left will likely continue to be too cowed to latch on to the obvious solution, basic income. Basic income will be branded "the atom bomb of class warfare" by the Right. It won't be politically feasible until so many people have been put out of work that the economy will have already crashed, and then it won't be ***economically feasible*** any more. The shortsightedness on Left and the reactionary backlash against change on the Right will strangle our only real hope in its crib.
