Evolution also gave us racism and a boatload of other cognitive biases. As Dawkins and others have written, our capacity for language, abstract thought, and culture allows us to move beyond the instincts and impulses evolution gave us. Dawkins' whole 'meme' idea was that competition and differential reproduction has now jumped, in humans, from being between genes to being between ideas.
