I honestly foresee a rise in conversions of cars from manual to self-driving. And of course, there are plenty of people who live or visit backcountry and will need the self driving feature to be turned off. I also think one of the major differences in self driving cars to that of automated trains, for example, is the smart technology. The cars base their route on what they physically "see" to avoid people or animals in the road, so someone hacking the system could not cause a huge 1000 person crash, as the cars would "see" each other and avoid. And I'm positive many failsafes will be implemented so that if the cameras are compromised, the car will pull over and stop, not go faster. I also agree with you in the event of natural disasters or protests, it is concerning that the car could affect your plans. But I also think that is something people will solve once it becomes a big enough problem: override open source programs or political demonstrations in walking or biking distance. People are nothing but resourceful, give everyone some credit.
