I can't speak for ocean shores but for inland lakes and rivers it depends on the organic matter bordering them. Erosion may happen for a variety of reasons but when dirt and plants erode into the water they can get jammed and over time organic matter builds up and the shore actually grows out, but this requires lots of oldgrowth
