Irish are last on the list of preferred native English speakers for English teaching jobs in East Asia because their accent is considered undesirable by many students there. The "alcoholic nature" was probably an excuse to cover up the real reason which some cultures such as Chinese and Korean don't like to mention explicitly. Usually Irish aren't even listed in the list of acceptable nationalities for these jobs: "from the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, or New Zealand". The applicants are expected to realize only Caucasians from these countries are welcome, with preference given to North Americans, then English, then Australians. I've seen a white 22-yr old Economics graduate from the US who gave multi-choice questions for his writing exams be given a job teaching English writing by a top 10 Chinese university instead of an Australian with 20 yrs experience as a journalist.
