Yeah but here's the thing Mark. A true AI will be needed for these to work and it will require every vehicle on the road to also be autonomous in order to move about efficiently enough to warrant the huge infrastructure expenditure.
Combine that with if a true AI is developed and can touch the tangible world i.e. no longer being confined to a digital existence, many many many more careers will be annihilated.
