1) There was a human Uber driver behind the wheel, neither he, nor the car nor the jaywalker saw each other.
2) How would you know this wouldn't have happened had the AI been switched off, jaywalkers die due to car accidents every day all over the globe.
Banning driverless cars would be a huge mistake, the only way to fix the problem is to fund more research and provide more real life testing and improve sensors and backup systems.

Infact I would also like to add a feature for the car t be able to ignore pedestrians or atleast move forward slowly to push pedestrians out of the way in the case of riots or protestors blocking the road, or trolls blocking the road just to mess with me, or criminals standing infront of the car to cause it to stop so that an associate may make its way to my driver window and mug me.
We need better jaywalker avoidance systems, and obstruction recognition
along with
an option to temporarily disregard pedestrians, I'd rather not have to retake manual control to drive through a mob.
I'm thinking from a global perspective, there are riots, mobs and mass protests in other countries, and highway robberies are not quaint features of a bygone era.
