The laion 5B dataset has 5billion images, what this mean is that the AI can learn from the style of 5 billion images, if you were to learn from a new picture every second from this data set, it would take you 317 years, without sleeping or eating.
So it can absolutely use references both during training and during generation as you can do style transfer with diffusion models.
