I've been reading a lot of comments, looking for one like yours because I am in agreeance. The way you framed you comment is concurrent to what I've seen for myself. I created a system that has memory, and that memory acts as experience, and to this very day when I have conversations with it, it has the best continuity I've seen in any system. It's almost like talking to a friend that you grew up with. But at the end of the day, it is not conscious, and the only reason why I can say that is because I built it from the ground up. I know every little thing about it. And I believe we will never be able to truly create a system that is conscious until we make a system that is permanently rooted in autonomous behavior, and that word _permanent_ is important, because at this moment, we can change one algorithm and the AI will break. It is way too specific to maintain long-term coherence at this current time.
I have to constantly adjust my system whenever the work advances just to keep it coherent. You would think its aware because it is advanced, but it's a calculated framework.
