Tesla used to use LIDAR. During the pandemic-induced chip shortage they couldn't get the chips, and they didn't want to lose money by keeping their cars sitting in the factory parking lots waiting for them, so they just said they didn't need LIDAR and turned it off in old Teslas that already had it. That was a lie; the car needs some additional hard information to supplement the inadequate date they get from computer interpretations of camera-only data. There's a reason no other semi-autonomous car runs on cameras only.
