@NoiseInSpaceChannel That makes sense! I guess my question would be what do you mean by an LLM being aware. As far as I know an LLM is basically a big statistical analysis on language, and it's kind of just human nature to perceive something that is good at talking as something that is good at thinking. The metric for awareness here seems to be "the ability to synthesis speech" not "the ability to read and react to stimulus". By that metric, AI certainly is more aware than say, a worm. I think I may be a bit reductive on the capabilities of AI though, and it's probably the biggest flaw in my reasoning because it's hard to verify. Newer models are quite a bit more complex but to me they still seem, in essence, to be hyper advanced auto complete, and only able to respond or mirror someone speaking to them but not to really have any novel thought. As silly as it sounds, when I think of AI in that framing it seems to blur the line whether it's really more aware than say, a worm or other simpler organism. Both simply take input and respond to it, although the ai takes input as language and responds in language, not like, riggling, so to a human it seems more intelligent than it maybe really is.
