He wasn't responsible for the accelerated development of the technology towards AGI. This is what I gathered from the history of machine deep learning in the book "Genius Makers" by NYT journalist Cade Metz, but also his many research papers that date back to the seventies (for example a research paper in 1993 with among other deep dyslexia simulation with a small language model), lectures, interviews, etc. He developed the technology from a desire to know how the human brain works, this knowledge would bring humanity forward. He didn't develop this singlemindedly and in isolation. Furthermore there are people including scientists and industry leaders that aren't so worried, who think the existential threat is hyperbole. I disagree with these people and think all humanity should be on board to urgently work on AI safety.
