In my opinion, no, it is never a waste of time investing in yourself or your skills, especially since most prognostications never come to fruition. I am almost 50 and I have CompTIA A+, Linux+, Network+, and Security+. It helps get you past the AI powered resume bots, understand the industry landscape and terminology, shows you can independently set and achieve goals, and is usually required when working on government / military contracts. Follow your interests, keep abreast of new developments in technology but don’t freak out about them, and cultivate your personal network of contacts (friends, family, coworkers at different companies). *Seriously, the best way to stay employed is through the people you know!* Friends at other companies can refer your name to the hiring managers and you can usually bypass the first level phone interview. It’s a bonus to know people at the company you will work for, as it is stressful making new work friends. I hope this helps!
