Here's an example I'm okay with:
Someone robs a convenience store. Cops use store's security footage and facial recognition to compare against database of mugshots of known felons. That's fine since they have a specific crime and person they're searching for. And the database of mugshots belongs to the government agencies involved.
Here's an example that's more troublesome:
We have a database of facial scans of suspects in all unsolved crimes that happened to have security footage available. We have a network of government run cameras in many public areas that are constantly comparing the faces of any person walking by to this database. The problem here is they are collecting the biometric data of the public at large without a warrant or probable cause. I believe this violates the 4th amendment. Ethically this is the same action as having cops stopping people at random and taking DNA swabs to compare to a database of unsolved crimes that have DNA evidence. Albeit a bit less intrusive. 🙂
