Yes you are harming artists because when you use AI it is still using stolen art and you are encouraging AI developers to keep developing programs to steal art. You could have commissioned an artist to make your characters in a style that you like but u chose not to. I wouldn't say that you are just as wrong as people who sell AI art as their own creation or that you are as bas as AI devs, but u r still wrong. I am a writer myself and i am not a very good artist nor do i have the money to pay for artists so i usually just pretend AI doesn't exist and search for references on websites, series and movies and then i create a folder for each of my characters with the pictures that suit them better. I do that for landscapes, buildings, rooms, etc. It helps a ton and in the end of the day i don't feel bad about using AI.
