It can be strongly argued that the unemployment during the great depression was when society decoupled from the 40 hour work week due to automation and technology. The government has been trying to fill this gap ever since, to MAINTAIN the 40 hour work week, when economic reality wants us all working 20 hours or less.
Keynes (the economist who designed our current system) said we would be working 15 hours per week by the year 1960.
