That is completely false if we're talking about Tesla, which is the only AI-based make (Waymo uses human-programmed deterministic code).
Based on telemetry from its self-driving fleet, the AI has already saved hundreds of lives by avoiding situations that a human driver could not have.
China is working on AI based self driving vehicles but their systems are based on AI code stolen from Tesla several years ago, so it will be way behind.
