@berkertaskiran mate, I’m a doctor and I’m about to start a neurology residency, so i have some knowledge in this matter. saying “only intelligence matters” is mixing up two different questions: what a system can do (capability) vs whether there is a subjective experience happening (consciousness). Nociceptors and pathways matter, sure but pain isn’t just the sensors and transmission. The real issue is whether there is a felt experience (qualia) which we still today don't have an objective measure for it. That difference is exactly why we treat “pain” differently from a reflex. same with machines. a system can be extremely intelligent and still be a pure optimizer with no experience. or it could, in principle, be intelligent and have some kind of experience. If there’s experience, then the question isn’t “stupid” at all it becomes ethically and practically relevant: can it suffer, do we have obligations, what counts as harm, what oversight is needed? can it has its own decisions and go against us? Even if you personally don’t care about the ethics, consciousness still isn’t irrelevant. We can’t responsibly build or regulate advanced AI while declaring “we won’t ask whether it has inner states” when that’s exactly the kind of uncertainty that has consequences. Intelligence tells you what it can achieve consciousness (if present) changes what it means to do things to it. So yeah capability matters. But dismissing consciousness as “stupid” is just avoiding the hardest part of the question, not solving it. until we can solve what pain ,memory, thoughts and other subjective experience actually are and how it arise in existence all talk outside of this framework of consciousness is ridicules and doesn't push us anywhere.
