They already made enough money to retire, even without start ups like Geoffrey Hinton. Some received better offer from even rivaling companies or countries. Anyone just wants the piece of the cake, so offer those researcher from a known AI company, would look like they resigned to protest. AI in the future would just be everywhere and a minor thing, hype will end eventually. Everyone's just want the big slice before the hype ends. Spreading fears about AI is just to stop people, keeping them ignorant, reducing competition on AI capitalist race. But huge economic gap will be more plausible, between poor and rich, and third world countries would suffer more, as AI is just the nuclear weapon hype, it will be huge for defensive strategies.
