Because most scientific breakthroughs are brought through the despair of another entity. Black death, let's study people suffering. Cancer research, study people in anguish. Technological breakthroughs that lead to the industrial boom, wars brought upon people. Why would it be any different to AI? Let's see how far we can push moral boundaries regardless of the possible consequences. History simply repeating itself, just in a new format, a much more dangerous format
