I've heard tons of arguments about the good generative ai will do for people, how it'll democratize art and allow the average person to make the same quality work as professional artists. Now let me ask you this: what part of art wasn't democratized before? genuinely, what positives does this provide? anyone who was passionate about creating before could learn art and prove their dedication. it wasn't gatekept by status or anything, just time and effort. That's why good art was made, because it was made by passionate people. now look at what we're left with in the wake of ai: everyone who has a spare minute is pumping out genuine trash that over crowds digital ecosystems and further buries the passionate people. companies love this, too because it makes more money. It might seem cool and great now that fun pictures are easier to make, but think about this: what are we left with long term? The people making art now that used to make a living will be cut out to make companies more profitable, forcing the creatives to do manual work to support themselves. companies start making entertainment and art without them, and that's that. say goodbye to inspired art, music, tv what have you, because it's all automated now. All the artists get to come home after their workday at McDonald's and unwind to mass-produced corporate tung tung sahur. This is the future we are headed towards, and there are people that cannot understand why that's bad. Were the luddites wrong for their beliefs? no, it makes sense to feel entitled to a profession you trained for your whole life and were told would secure your future. would I abolish textile mills? no because there's a place in society for cheaper, mass-produced clothing and clothes made by craftsmen that is more expensive. would I get rid of ai data centers? ignoring the obvious ecological impacts, yes, because ai art will leave no room in society for genuine art and will kill off some of the best things humanity has to offer.
