Obvious in what sense? What is obvious about it? Nobody is going around saying sophisticated statistical modeling will end humanity. But a lot of people are saying the equivalent statement - artificial intelligence will end humanity. AI as shown by ML, LLMs and NNs is just sophisticated statistics.
