Google should up to people doing seaches, whatever that user is searching for. What they're doing with machine learning is trying to take a guess at what a user means when they something as unspecific as such as "shoe". Right now, their algorithm runs the risk of being too narrow, due to the biases. Google want to overcome this.
No. It is not at all sexist to provide people with different results based on their gender. It's a little naive, a little basic. Ideally, we would want to serve users different results based on differences in what they are actually looking for. Gender can be an indicator of this, but Google pretty clearly want to move on the more precise and robust indicators. Gender is good, but still very rough.
