The environmental impacts of AI are greatly exaggerated by its critics, especially when it comes to things like water use. You're also overlooking all the ways that AI can help progress climate science and clean energy initiatives through things like better weather prediction, real-time tracking of ecosystems, and accurate predictions on how those ecosystems change over time, as well as efficiency gains in supply chains and algorithms that lead to more efficient energy distribution.
These benefits aren't theoretical either. We've already seen AI create new, more eco-friendly materials (forever chemical free coolants). We already have predicted natural disasters with gen AI. Look up what google is doing in collaboration with chemists and ecologists, marine biologists, conservationists. Google's AlphaEvolve has already saved it hundreds of millions in energy costs through efficiency gains it found and implemented.
These systems will benefit society in ways that you haven't even considered yet! Does that mean we should let AI companies have free reign over how these systems operate? Of course not. But the benefits are clear, even in places like climate science and nature preservation.
