There is no technical sense in which “AI” is anywhere close to simulating anything like sentience. I find it ironic too that you characterize OUR understanding of LLM’s as “anthropomorphizing.” No disrespect, but I’m pretty confident in saying that you have it completely backwards—there’s nothing LLM’s are doing that even REMOTELY resembles anything like a living, independent system. It can’t survive on its own, it can’t think, it can’t create—it even lacks sensory interfaces which interact with the word in any meaningful way other than leystrokes from ACTUAL sentient beings—it does more or less nothing but mechanically generate enormous permutations of words in a particular ordering—which is of course only useful to US since we created the meaning for which those word permutations resemble in the first place! And IMO it’s even WORSE in terms of usefulness (which is quite limited anyhow) when you consider the billions of dumb capital being poured into these systems to replace service call jobs (and do a substantially worse job according to customers), and is growing on the momentum of hype and on the worrisome lack of intelligent comprehension from the US executive and management classes. If there were any sort of intelligent and careful deliberation left in our society, most of our corporate executive class would have their roles terminated before they sink the entire society and bring a corresponding public backlash which ends up terminating those executives but this time with a literal guillotine.
