We frequently take 5% chance in the stock market crashing. The difference with AI is that we've got risks across dozens of categories, not a risk of a plane crash.
Hinton says crazy stuff. I agree with him on autonomous AI in military systems (e.g. Palantir's Maven and Israel's Lavender). I work in the field and find Hinton's opinions to be quite extreme and leaning too heavily on speculative AGI rather than addressing the very real risks we already have.
Yann LeCun is a good counterpoint to Hinton.
