I can't give you an argument of what's the difference between ai learning and human learning. It's an interesting philosophical question. I don't know enough about how ai works to tell you one way or the other. But I can tell you that ai companies didn't receive permission for the artwork they used to create the training data sets. Artists have no issue with other artists using their work to train their own artistic skills. One group doesn't have permission, one group does. It doesn't matter how similiar or different the groups are, theft is based on whether a group has permission. Saying AI learns the same as humans may be 100 percent valid, but if artists say ai can't use their work, then it's theft for ai companies to use their work. The reason why someone wants you not to use what they own is irrelevant. It could be the stupidest reason but if you take their private property, that constitutes theft. There is a way for ai companies to do this ethically, get permission from the artists to use their work for the training data set. Getty images gets permission from all the artwork on their site that they sell so it's not like there's no model for it. By the way, Getty images is suing the ai companies because they stole their work that they had to pay artists for.
