@dougking5703 I can think of a couple of things that, at least contemporaneously, seemed "pie in the sky." An economy without slavery seemed "pie in the sky" until after the Civil War. Landing on the moon seemed "pie in the sky" until we did. Commercial airline traffic seemed "pie in the sky" until we did it. Heck, a Federal Reserve seemed "pie in the sky" until we realized it was fundamental to maintaining a national banking system. UBI, the "Fair Tax" (consumption tax), and other such proposed fundamental shifts in how we manage our means of wealth redistribution are going to seem quite foreign to us. But, like so many other wholesale changes (remember, the notion of an "income tax" in the first place seemed pretty radical at the time), necessity becomes not only the mother of invention, but the mother of implementation, too. Anyway, like I said before, I sincerely doubt changes like this will happen at a broad scale first, and at any scale they won't happen quickly. What is fairly easy to forecast right now, though, is that the consolidation of wealth in the U.S. is increasing at a greater-than-linear rate. At this pace, it won't be long before so few people own so much wealth and, at the same time, AI and robotics will replace the low- and medium-skilled work forces, that we'll have the unbelievably wealthy (who won't care whether AI and robots have taken over) and a diminishing skilled labor pool (who will become increasingly desperate as they lose they jobs and become more impoverished). At some point, we'll fall into some kind of Orwellian dystopia. There might be a civil war, it just won't be about Conservatives versus Liberals. It'll be about the extremely wealthy versus the impoverished masses. Something will HAVE to change. Whether that change occurs peacefully with reasonable and considered law-making, or violently with social upheaval is up to us.
