He's actually anything but that.
Hinton likes to make quick jibes, especially at Chomsky (his pet hate figure), but also sometimes at other AI researchers. He comes across as quite smug at times and even onley has dismissed academics involved in philosophy. Which is quite frankly absurd: it's a field that helps us understand/debate the consequences of epistemological change such as that produced by the advent of AI. You can't "solve" every area of human experience algorithmically or through the kind of heuristics that produced current AI black boxes. It's about as ignorant as saying "we'd be better off without poets".
