Nothing was "broken down into numbers" the data in the datasets is per definition already an assortment of numbers, as that is what text and images in digital formats are. An AI image generator doesn’t extract number from a given image, it converts noise into a probabilistically determined image, based on a given text prompt. This relation between the prompt input and the image output could not be made by an image generator, if it wasn’t first trained on a dataset that contained pairs of text descriptions of images and their associated images. These images are for the most part taken from the internet with disregard of fair use and for profit, which means that it is stolen. As for now AI image generators can’t compete with real artists, that is not the reason why people are mad. AI generators excel at quantity but severely lack in terms of quality and consistency. While it might change in the future if past growth doesn’t diminish in the future, that remains to be seen. As datasets have been used up, power demands are growing exponentially, lawsuits are being filed, and most importantly shareholders are awaiting their ROI. If AI companies can’t fix their current issues faster than their blitz scaling funding runs out, investors will be displeased as they are waiting to see an actual usage, or profit turning business with which they can make their money back. Even if they will manage to do that, a good portion of people will still cherish human made creations. How big that portion is would also remain to be seen. Why should we delegate something so central and easily obtainable in our culture such as art. You often hear that AI image generators need to "democratize" art, when we have been painting things on walls in caves before we even built the first field. Nothing is more easy to learn than art. Why try to remove or commercialize that?
