He shot himself with his step father's gun. The gun was secured and stored properly, his mother had taken away his cell phone for bad grades. He broke into the secured container to get his cell phone. Sewell then took the gun as well. It shows that electronic and digital addiction is a major problem then add the AI programming/ algorithms that are intentionally manipulative. It's bad. Real bad.
