@laurentiuvladutmanea "This is a pathetic strawman. This is not what artists are saying."
Where was that a strawman argument? They might not say it directly in a way like the OP did in that Quote, but in a roundabout way, almost every Artist in this whole argument pretty much keeps reiterating the same points or goes on long-winded tangents in their videos or reddit/twitter posts, just to end up saying exactly that : "If you want art done, either learn to do it yourself or pay someone for a commission, but goshdarnit : Do not use something like AI art"
Even though it is a faster, free solution to someone who, depending on their living situation, does not have the time/energy required to spend years on learning how to do art on a professional level or has the money to pay hundreds of dollars for commissions.
And look, i DO understand the concerns of artists about AI art being based on existing artwork and their fears about their own work being "fed" into the system, so to speak. And i also do not agree with idiots misusing AI programs to blatantly steal other artists' work, copy their art styles or "recreate" pictures of others with the help of AI. And i do hope that artists will be given the tools to help them "opt out" their artwork from the AI database and make it impossible to be recreated, so they do not have to worry about their art style being stolen.
But with that being said, i pretty much never saw one of those Artists in any of those videos say : "If you absolutely have no way of spending the needed time to learn art and/or live on such a tight budget, that you can't just willy-nilly afford 50-100$ commissions, because you have bills/kids/groceries/medicals to pay, then it's okay to fall back on something like AI art or comparable tools"
Every artist just basically seems to think that every person, NO MATTER what, can just somehow magically make up enough time to spend learning art. Sure, everyone can find 5-10 minutes in their days to pick up a pen and draw stick figures, but actually mastering art to a level, that allows you to produce art that is comparable to the surface quality the AI art generators put out (Sure it might be flawed, but even with the flaws it has, it would still be vastly better than a shitty wobbly stickman drawing that everyone who has not learned art probably only can do, i tell you), would take hours of dedicated time each day for months or YEARS to master it that way. And as much as they try to deny it, not every person out there has that time to freely distribute to practicing art like that, when their living/financial or work-related situations just won't allow it.
But if someone ever mentions any of those points, then most artists in this whole AI art debate get all defensive with the same arguments..which then always basically amount to them saying, that If you do not have the time or energy to learn art, you are just lazy or unmotivated..COMPLETELY disregarding or minimizing any points alluding to the to fact that perhaps there are good reasons as to why other people can't do it/don't have the time to, or don't have the money to pay someone else to do it. And if all else fails, they always retreat back to their default statement "Every argument for AI art are all just excuses for art theft", "ALL AI ART BAD", etc.
And the biggest irony of it all, just like OP has already mentioned, is how 90% of the artists, who are out here complaining about theft, pretty much all have downloaded or streamed games, movies, music, software and/or books (you know, things the creators put dozens to hundreds of hours of work in) for FREE (e.g "stolen") at least once in their lives. And they probably did not bat a single eye back then. And that's fine! The music-, movie and game industries have dealt with that for DECADES. (And it concerned everyone, from small musicians/writers/artists, all the way to large companies) And yet, all of it is still around, isn't it?
And i assure you, Art and artists are gonna be just fine as well. AI art will either develop into something, that does not have to rely on existing work to put out things eventually or some kind of protection system/law will be put into place for artists, who can then exempt their art from the machine learning, or have it removed whenever people try to copy it through AI. And i am all for that as well. But effin stop with the black/white mentality out here.
