Indeed, it's merely a phase—the new NFTs. If you look at that situation, the people who are for AI now were for AI then and would repeat the same uneducated arguments as now (it's the future bla bla). In the end it didn't make money and everyone hates it. It's still around, but so small and insignificant that I genuinely forget it ever existed sometimes. Same for AI, although it'll probably mark history a bit more.
