They did. Those people were called cranks and cars continued to be built. The wealth created by those cars and the technological advancements they enabled both on roads and in homes ended up having massive positive effects in almost every country they were introduced to, far in excess of the negatives.
See, it turns out that the people who were saying "stop building cars" were guessing at the eventual negative outcomes but didn't actually understand the technology underpinning the product or what it was replacing. Just like Yudkowsky, a high school and college dropout who doesn't work in any tech field except his self-appointed "AI researcher" role. This is like a flat earth believer appointing themselves as "gravity researcher." If they were doing the actual research, they'd realize there were some flaws in their core reasoning.
