Yes, it was her 'job' and texting while 'driving' is illegal. (Leaving aside for now the question whether the law was written in such a way as to cover what could be argued is an observer in a 'driverless' car.)
During our first romance with automation, the industrial revolution, the human began to be removed from the line to improve quality and quantity. Workplace safety regulations and strict labor laws added motivation to that trend. Targeted were unskilled jobs where production losses arose from accidents attributed to carelessness caused by 'tedium'.
Now, Uber, in the name of automation, is reintroducing tedium in the workplace by replacing the tasks performed by human drivers without actually removing the human from behind the wheel. Next gen tech featuring the latest interactive response systems is going to do the job for us but, we'll still have to report to work. We just won't have that much to do besides sitting upright and staying awake.
Uber's motivation is $imple. But, why is government so electrified for this commercial enterprise that they're giving millions in tax breaks? Might it be useful to have the power to control movement or consumption, or the exchange of information or just plain keep tabs?
But then, it's probably just me. It could never happen in the real world. Just ask YouTube, Google, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon...no one cares enough to track you . Right?
