I was thinking the same thing. Algorithms aren't necessarily the objective oracles the way we commonly think of them as. An algorithm making predictions based on historical data is bound to replicate that data. An algorithm not based on historical data relies on speculation in some form or some degree and will reveal (or worse, hide) biases and assumptions on the part of whoever designed the algorithm.
Like Steven stated so well, an algorithm trained on the data we have will merely replicate justice as it has been done so far, not change it. An algorithm thus only serves to obfuscate issues in the justice system behind a veil of infallibility and inaccountability.
