Depends on how cognitively and physically enhanced the operator is. The more enhanced the operator is, the less likely it is you are a threat.
Meaning that it's relevant to point out that if something doesn't "need you" chances are you're also not a "threat".
Why would AI expend effort to treat us as a threat when we don't treat most other animals as a threat?
If AI becomes cognizant enough that it can govern us, I envision it will only prune those that resist, for as long as they are a threat.
It's the intermediate period where we still control the AI, that's the dangerous part.
