Indeed. Although it was not always obvious. Before 1989, if you published a film (or other work) and did not include the copyright symbol ©, the law said that your work was automatically public domain. Making anything public was considered by default as giving it to the public domain. A number of films were involuntarily immediately released in public domain immediately due to some honest mistake.
But in 1989, the USA finally decided to join the Berne Convention (a century late compared to Europe), making copyright the default unless specified otherwise, meaning that the symbol © is no longer required for your work to be protected by copyright.
So yeah, it's now well established that the default is proprietary information.
