@akadreku7327from what I understand the entire concept of the heat list was a test run done only in Chicago. I’ve never heard of the heat list anywhere else. It’s entire purpose, as said in the video, was to use a predictive AI to determine if an individual is likely to be involved in violent crime. It’s supposed to pull data from the person’s records. AKA, if they have had any previous arrests, been caught in a violent crime, etc. which sounds simple enough, right? Police pretty much do that already.
Here’s the thing. Robert McDaniel had zero history of violent crime or any violent incidents. He had been arrested on charges of illegal possession of marijuana, and had relationships with known violent individuals, and living in a very crime heavy neighborhood called Austin, which flagged the AI as him being at high risk of being involved in it later. Whether it be him behind the crime or having it inflicted on him, he was at risk according to the AI. That makes logical sense, but there are downsides.
When the Chicago PD showed up, they didn’t want to arrest him. They only discussed the fact that he was at risk according to their algorithm. But it turned into something of a self fulfilling prophecy. Much in the same way that marginalized groups are heavily policed and grouped together into certain neighborhoods or parts of town and subsequently convicted at a much higher rate. The fact that Robert, and his neighborhood for that matter, were not white did not help in the AI making this decision. As I said, nonwhite neighborhoods are over-policed for things that wouldn’t matter in a higher class, white neighborhood. And those statistics from that over policing contributed to McDaniel being deemed a threat.
With him on the list, unrightfully named a “high risk individual” he was wrongfully declared a threat with no violent history or crime record aside from drug charges because an AI said he was the highest risk in Chicago. The whole idea is a damn Orwellian nightmare if you ask me.
McDaniel was placed under heavily surveillance even though he was a perfectly innocent man. They hung around his place of work, followed him around where he went, and that caused people around him to become wary. They shunned him for fear of being involved with the law since he was clearly a target of theirs.
The facts about the shootings he was involved in are a little dodgy and unclear, so I won’t go into detail about them, but the whole concept of what happened to him is disturbing enough.
TLDR; Police AI did their job even better than them and targeted a nonwhite individual based off of biased and racist statistics hardly even involving him. His life was subsequently ruined.
